Odyssey Analytical Writing Assignment

Throughout the book The Odyssey, there is a common theme that is stay faithful to your leaders and if you do not it will come back to get you in the end.

In book 12 of The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew face many problems and without the help of Odysseus, their leader, they would most likely all die. Odysseus not only knows about all of the obstacles they are going to face in their travels, but also how to get past them. So overall without Odysseus' leadership the crew would not make it very far alive.  One example is the run in with the Sirens, Odysseus told his crew to tie him to the ship and then plug there ears with wax so they will not hear the sirens.  "...and I stopped the ears of my comrades one by one.  They bound me hand and foot in the tight ship-erect at the mast-block lashed by ropes to the mast." (Page 276 Lines 192-194) The crew had to put wax in their ears so they would not jump off the sip and drowned, Odysseus however wants to hear the Sirens so even the wax would not stop him from steering the ship into the island and killing everyone.  With the leadership of odysseus the crew made it past the Sirens and continued onto face more troubles.

                In book 19 of
The Odyssey, Odysseus returns to Ithacea, his homeland, and wants to see if his wife is still loyal to him.  There are many suitors that are trying to take the hand of Odysseus' wife in marriage because they believe he is dead.  His wife seems to be staying loyal to him and she is not believing that Odysseus is dead.  "I YEARN FOR ODYSSEUS ALWAYS (Page 394 Lines 151-152)
This quote shows that she prays that Odysseus will come back because no one can replace him.  She knows none of the suitors can match the love she has for Odysseus, so when she hears that he is on his way home she is overcome with joy and stays loyal to her one and true husband.
In Book 22 of The Odyssey, there are people that have not stayed loyal to one of the most important person in the land, the king Odysseus, and he will not let this go unpunished.  For example, the suitors have not stayed loyal to Odysseus and the will be paying the price of death for it.  Odysseus says, "You dogs! you never imagined I'd return from Troy- so cocksure that you bled my house to death..." (Page 440 Lines 36-39) Odysseus and his son Telemachus set free their anger that has been built up in them on to the helpless suitors.  Because of the suitors lack of loyalty to Odysseus they all pay with their lives.

Randy Moss PIE Paragraph

Randy Moss is a new addition to the Vikings, which could be good or bad.  First of all he is one of the most explosive wide-receivers in the NFL.  This will help the Vikings because they are weak in their receiving part of the team. The Vikings have are losing their games because they can not throw the ball Adrian Peterson is a big threat but just not enough. Secondly, Moss could hurt the Vikings because he is know for not working hard if he is not happy with what he has.  This would be bad because the Vikings gave up their third round NFL draft for him.  His trade could be a waste of that draft, but then again he could help them win the Super Bowl.  To end on a good note, Moss is one of the top ranked players in the NFL.  This means that the Vikings quarter back, Brett Farve, will have someone that he can always throw too.  His favorite receiver, Sydeny Rice, is out for the rest of the season which is why Moss is a great addition.  Randy Moss once played for the Vikings and he left on bad terms, lets hope, this time he will stay and be very helpful.

The Gay Opinion

Using the word gay is used allot these days inside and outside of school.  There are some people that may take it seriously and take it a step further then just depression to suicidal thoughts.  Suicide is definitely not the answer to anything but if all his peers keep saying that he is gay there is really nothing he can do.  That is why my opinion on the student who committed suicide at Rutgers University over the alleged outing of his sexuality, is that the school did the right thing afterwards creating doing "Project Civility".

It is sad that it took the life of a student for the school to recognize the damage that was being done, but the civility project was the right response.  This project definitely changed how some kids acted and thought about gay people.  If I made some one feel that bad by just calling them gay and they killed them, that would be enough to change how I acted. But for the kids that were not very affected by the suicide is the reason why this project was such a good idea.

The "Project Civility" shows that the school will take responsibility for their students.  If the school did not do this project the students would still be calling each other gay, which might lead to more suicides.  The school had a great response to the suicide.

The words gay and fag take little effort to  say but they have a great affect on people, which is why "Project Civility" was made.  Rutgers University had to take action on their students for causing a suicide. There is nothing better they could of done.

PIE Hero Paragraph

Star Wars and Blue Diamond have a very similar flow of events because they both involve heros, but there are their differences.  First, in Star Wars and Blue Diamond, there were elixirs in both.  Even though the elixirs had two very different purposes (the diamond to look good and the light saber to kill), they meant allot to the helped the heros. In Star Wars the light saber help Luke through many battles which help him complete his mission.  In Blue Diamond the diamond prevented Doug's friend from committing, which was his mission.  A second similarity is that they both had refused their quest at first. Both heros had better things to do then to go on their mission.  In Star Wars Luke did not want to eave because he thought his uncle would be mad for leaving him before harvest.  In Blue Diamond Doug wanted to stay home and study instead of go out to eat.  Finally, a difference in these two stories is that Star Wars had a tempter and Blue Diamond did not.  The tempter tries to lure the heros of of their path and do something they will regret.  Star Wars tempter is Han Solo when he tells Luke that there is nothing for him here and he can not do anything about it, Blue Diamond  does not have a temptation.  All hero stories follow a similar story line but have their differences still.
